Educational Support

This service is provided for children between the ages of 4 and 14 years who have special educational needs. Support is given, on an individual basis, in all academic and social areas in need of development. This includes language / communication, writing / pre-writing skills, mathematics / cognition, fine and gross motor skills, social interaction and play skills. Sessions vary according to each child’s needs. For most children, however, they require a highly structured routine and for this I follow aspects of the TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic Children and Communication Handicapped) method using a visual schedule, reward system and start and finish boxes. For those children who have language difficulties I also tend to use PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) and objects, photographs and/or symbols to aid their learning.

Parents have the opportunity to observe the sessions, providing their child is not effected by their presence. If observation does not take place then a session by session synopsis is provided on the child’s attainments.

Opportunity is offered to work on the school’s Individual Educational Programme, if applicable, or the establishment of the child’s own educational programme. Long and short term goals and progress reports are also supplied.
